This one I have personal experience with.

Former relative (divorce) lives in Lerwick, which is located in the 
Shetland Islands (for those who don't know, most maps don't show much 
more than a dew dots for the location of said islands.  Look north of 
Scotland.).

She came to this (Oregon) side of the pond, taking a holiday to the 
colonies.  We were at my former mother-in-law's flat with a friend of 
the ex.  I asked the visitor was she going out for a fag, and if so, 
hold on, I'll join her.

Said friend of the ex whipped her head around to give me one of the most 
confused looks I've ever seen.

I found her reaction to be very funny.

And when I visited them in Lerwick, they used the term hoover to mean 
vacuuming.
