Quite the reverse, actually. IMHO, software-generated carriers are 
more common, but some people (like me) run into problems with them 
and end up getting HW-carrier devices like the one from 
myblaster.info or the USB_UIRT2. The former doesn't use lirc, but the 
UIRT does.
