I don't know if you ever found a resolution for this but I ran into a
similar problem trying to test XvMC.

I don't actually use XvMC but I was curious as to how it would perform
in 0.21. I'm using my own custom profile group with just one profile
(usually libmpeg2, xv-blit, and bobx2). Every time I tried to switch
it to XvMC, not only would I get the error you got:

2008-04-13 17:28:30.117 AFD Error: Could not open codec 0xb3519e60,
id(MPEG2VIDEO_XVMC) type(Video) aborting. reason -1

...but it would actually crash the frontend. I read a post on an
ubuntu forum regarding a similar issue that XvMC can't use more than
one CPU and I had mine set to two (next to the decoder entry in the
profile). That was it...as long as I had that set to one XvMC worked
fine. Two CPUs works fine for libmpeg2 and Standard (ffmpeg).
