I don't see why an STB should be "insanely expensive", especially in
the quantities the cable companies buy them in.
There's nothing in the box that's particularly expensive, especially
if the crypto stuff is external.
They certainly shouldn't cost more than a satellite receiver, and even
the price the sat companies charge for a lost receiver are not that
high.
Maybe the STB makers are trying to stick it to the cable companies,
that's a sentiment I would find hard to disagree with.
