Finally got the VFD working there are now patches to the vfd standalone from
venky http://codeka.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35&start=10


There are also patches for lirc-0.8.3pre2 CVS but I haven't had any luck
with these http://codeka.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=42
