First off I would say put the channels.conf file into your .azap 
directory, which is in your home directory. Then use azap to try and 
tune the card to a particular channel. If that works, check and see if 
you can play TV in mplayer. To get myth to find the channels, go to the 
scan for channels section in mythtv-setup, and in the scan type drop 
down box select import from file.
Are you getting the error when you actually initiate the scan or when 
you try and select the scan type? If mythtv-setup is throwing the error 
itself, what does the terminal window you launched it from say?
