Are you "sure" all the proper modules are loaded and permissions are correct,
and in the correct sequence? Most distros will change device permissions to
the user who is logging in as they login, but init scripts usually run before
this happens.
The error indicates the device simply isn't present. Add
a 'ls -la /dev/<device> to the init script and redirect it to /tmp/file to
see the environment the init scripts see if there is any doubt.
