I finally got back on this track and have done what you suggested.
Under mythfrontend -v important here is a show that worked:
2008-08-19 20:38:13.391 Using protocol version 40
2008-08-19 20:38:13.997 VideoOutputXv: XVideo Adaptor Name: 'NV17 Video Texture'

here is one that did not.
2008-08-19 20:38:27.506 Tuning to 'MPEG Program 1' pnum: 0x1 without
CRC check on PMT
2008-08-19 20:38:28.102 mpegts_read_header: could not find any PMT's
2008-08-19 20:38:28.102 AFD Error: avformat err(-1) on av_open_input_file call.
2008-08-19 20:38:28.134 Couldn't open decoder for:
myth://192.168.1.111:6543/1091_20080819190000.mpg
2008-08-19 20:38:28.134 TV Error: StartPlayer(): NVP is not playing
after 20000 msec

I could not see the option you were talking about in mplayer so did not do that.

Does not matter what decoder I use but I have figured out something
interesting, this only happens with shows from KQED in San Francisco
ATSC OTA broadcasts. Look at my mythweb screen shot and you will see
that the shows that will not play are indicated by the lack of a
preview. The ones that will play have preview screens showing. This
started on 8/15 for KQED. Every show before 8/15 can play fine. Every
KQED show on 8/15 or later will not play. 2 other myth users are
having the same problem.

Look at that screen shot. Only thing different about shows that I can
watch (they have previews) and those that hang the system (they don't
have previews) is that the bad ones are KQED (9.1 and 9.3) Channel
9.2 is KTEH and that is fine.

If soneone can translate that error message above, I will talk to the
KQED engineer and let him know what you we have found.
