[mythtv-users] sa8300 and sa4250hdc firewire channel changing

i had an hd-pvr sitting on the shelf for a while and this week i decided to take the plunge and install trunk so i could use it with mythtv. the thing that was holding me back was how to change channels on my stb. i looked all over this list for channel changing on the sa4250hdc but couldn't find anything.  eventually i found this thread on the mythbuntu forum.

apparently majoridiot had figured out how to change channels on the sa4250hdc via firewire more than 5 months ago. different cable providers use different firmwares and further down the thread bml137 shows how they modified the code to make it work for their particular sa4250hdc and that's what ended up working for me. i also have an sa8300 in the house so i tested the channel changer script on that and it worked. majoridiot had also developed a firewire priming script called mythprime which included a feature for powering on the box before priming. i that bit of code and stuck it into his channel changing script so that if the box is off, the script will turn the box on and then change to the appropriate channel. i'm not programmer so the code might not be correct but it does the job.

it took me a good while to find this information so i thought i would post it here for others who might be looking for a similar solution. i'm using time warner cable in NC by the way.
