I have never yet seen smart tell me a drive was bad or going bad at
work where I have over 100 drives and I have replaced > 20 bad drives
in the last 10 years. More would have been bad but drives usually get
replaced when their size gets too small to be worth the 10W so so they
consume at idle. Usually I find bad (or going bad) drives by the
machine locking up or the drive getting kicked out of a raid 5 or 6
array. And when it gets kicked out of an array I run badblocks for a
weekend on the drive and if it finds 1 single bad block I RMA the
drive since modern hard drives should automatically remap bad sectors
to good ones they have in reserve. If you see any bad sectors then
something really bad is happening..
