Only thing I would do differently is instead of ALSA:default, use ALSA:spdif

You might try it and see if it helps.  Also, if you are on Fedora,
some have reported they needed to uninstall Pulse Audio, which was
involved apparently as there is a half way to uninstall it which isn't
enough.
