You can roll your own RPMs, which makes management
easier especially if you have multiple systems to
manage.  Between the following page in the Wiki and
Axel's spec file at atrpms.net, I put together a spec
file that builds the appropriate RPMs for me and my OS
(CentOS 5.1).

One note is that I find this most useful to do my
compiles in a VMware machine.  The compile requires a
whole bunch of development libraries and such that I
do not want on my "production" system.
