Sort of along the sames line as the OP's problem, I noticed that my 
system (dual core P4 3.2) playing OTA HD at 720p uses about 35-40% CPU 
on one core and 10% on the other, but playing SD I get 99% usage on one 
CPU and about 20% usage on the other. Very wacky. Playing SD I see a lot 
of this in the log:

However playback is fine, so I'm not too concerned about it, but it does 
seem odd that SD is using more than double the CPU of HD. This is with 
no XvMC for either SD or HD. I guess what I'm saying is that it does 
seem like a sound problem.
