I also saw very high CPU ( mine is core2duo 6300 - 1.86 ghz ) while 
viewing HD.  Nvidia 8600 with Nvidia driver.  Also with 7300 Nvidia.
Though, when I watch that same file with Mplayer or Xine, full screen, 
all is well.  I really suspect an issue with the internal player.
There are lots of related and semi-related threads on this list.  I 
tried many deinterlacers, xv, opengl etc......
