PCI-X is backwards compatible with 3.3v PCI 2.x, though the entire bus
will operate at the speed of the slowest device. Unfortunately, in the
PC world manufacturers often think that documented, defined standards
are just casual suggestions. The high-end motherboards that have PCI-X
slots probably implement it correctly, but consumer-level PCI cards are
probably going to be a crap shoot. That being said, you might find that
somebody else on this list or on some A/V forum has already tried the
same cards you have in PCI-X slots and can tell you if they worked,
didn't work, or destroyed themselves (yes, I've heard of that
happening).
