Can you check your /etc/init.d/mythbackend file for the following
lines (on .173):

  # Does not work on Red Hat, do to to missing audio/video groups.
  daemon --user mythtv $binary $OPTIONS
  daemon $binary $OPTIONS

what is your --user set to?
