Andrew,
The patch worked and it made sense. The user I logged in with on the remote
backend/frontend system did not have a mysql.txt file setup which is why it
was unable to connect to the API. Once I logged in as mythuser it worked
fine.

I am using the tarball on a Gentoo system. I modified the mythtv-update-motd
file to use the /etc/motd. However I did not have a motd file to begin with
so nothing happened. I attempted to add the line to the motd manually and I
guess I did it wrong. Your install procedure doesn't work on my machine.
When I run it I get
./mythtv-update-motd: line 3: /etc/default/mythtv-status: No such file or
directory

I copied the file to that location manually and then rerun the setup and get
mythuser at asgard /root/mythtv-status-0.6.2/bin $ ./mythtv-update-motd
/etc/default/mythtv-status: line 11: use: command not found
/etc/default/mythtv-status: line 12: use: command not found

If I run /etc/default/mythtv-status myself I get a valid response.
mythuser at asgard /root/mythtv-status-0.6.2/bin $ /etc/default/mythtv-status
-h niflheim
