lirc-0.8.2-2.fc8.x86_64
kernel-2.6.23.9-85.fc8.x86_64
udev-116-3.fc8.x86_64

You don't need anything in modprobe.conf since the kernel module is just
the standard usb-serial module. /etc/sysconfig/lirc file attached.

I have this udev rule to provide a consistent location for the usb-uirt
device, put it in /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules:
# Match USB UIRT remote control receiver/sender, which appears as a ttyUSB
# device
BUS=="usb", KERNEL=="ttyUSB*", ATTRS{product}=="USB-UIRT", SYMLINK+="usb-uirt"

Cheers,

Martin.
