For what it's worth, I solved my problem.  At the risk of displaying
my own ignorance/silliness, I'll close this out by explaining.

I downgraded my video drivers to nvidia-drivers-96.43.01.  This didn't
help, regardless of the Profile settings.

Then, I found http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-5.html .  Using
the "Enabling real-time scheduling of the display thread" instructions
for PAM, I enabled real-time priority.  Then, made sure that real-time
priority was enabled in the Mythfrontend's settings.

Once again, I have a working HD frontend!  It still gets prebuffering
pauses after commercial skips, but that's no big deal.

Oh, and a couple of last notes:
 - This box is an Athlon 64 3200+ (not a Sempron 2600+).
 - I'd adamantly asserted this was working prior to Profiles.  I'm
pretty sure I previously had this working using the SUID route, but
somewhere along the way during a recompile/install (around the
introduction of Profiles), that got blown away and real-time priority
went away.
