Not sure what metric for "success" you're using.  Asterisk's big advantage
seems to be that several companies find it useful as a starting point for
selling packaged systems, so they're willing to fund development and pay
bounties.  This works because telephone systems are usually leased or
professionally installed, not set up by end users.  A home PVR is rather
different and unlikely to attract as much corporate buy-in, even in the best
of circumstances.
