I had the mouse set up with lircmd with my ATI Remote Wonder: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATI_Remote_Wonder

The mouse worked decently, but whenever lircmd was running, the up /
down buttons (not the same as the mouse pad) would double-press. I
never ended up fixing it.

I did have the mouse working with evdev as well through regular X, and
it worked much better. Mouse was much smoother to move with no jumps.
But, I couldn't bind the other buttons, so I went back to lirc. Could
probably make it work with something like this: http://evuraan.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-use-ati-remote-wonder-ii-remote.html

If you have a remote which only works with lirc, then you'll have to
use lircmd.
