My slave started life as a winbox with two WD120, RAID
0 on the onboard Promise chip. Couldn't get the
Promise to work in Ubuntu so I did the software raid
thing.
When drives got cheap, I plucked out the two 120s and
dropped in a single 500.
Later, I stuck one of the 120s on a external USB cable
to format and use for something. 
Ubuntu, recognizing the drive was once part of a RAID,
begged for it's mate so they could reunite.
Gave me lots of confidence in a software raid setup.
