For a pretty well supported Linux USB receiver check Iguanaworks:

I have one, and it was fairly easy to setup. I had a serial one from 
home Electronics, but for some reason I can't get it working with 
Ubuntu. I also have an IR keyboard/mouse, but my learning remote can't 
learn the IR from the keyboard, otherwise I would just use that without 
LIRC.
