Watching live TV *IS* watching a recording, that's what a PVR is all about.

You might look at your recording profiles, as live TV is different from the 
others. That's the main difference.

Is your machine doing anything else while recording? Commflagging? 
Transcoding? If the machine is very busy you might get corruption, especially 
if disk I/O is being taxed heavily. Look at your CPU load and IOWAIT states.
