[mythtv-users] Transcoding basics

I am trying to get started with transcoding. I have read all the wikis
I can find and looked back at all the postings this year. I have also
Googled the subject. The instructions were helpful in that they allowed
me to actually have a job run.

I want to reduce file size of some of my recordings that I will be
watching on the Tv and not the projector. I am using Mythbuntu 8.04 on
a AMD 5400+ machine with 2G fast ram and 6200 video.

I ran a transcoding job on one of the programs that I have recorded.
The job completed and reported this: 3.1GB => 5GB or something close to
that in the status page. That didn't look encouraging.

I thought I would check the file size myself. I cannot find where the
job went. I looked in the recordings folder and there is nothing there
recorded today. I looked on my Desktop, nothing there.

Bottom line: I clearly don't know what I am doing. I would like someone
to point me to a nice tutorial on the subject.

I would like to have this done by selecting a transcoding option when I
schedule the show for recording. As much as possible, I would like to
stick to built in functions. I am not going to record this to DVD or
put it on an iPod. Just want to save a months worth of Jepordy and not
fill up the disk with them.

Allen
