Is the warranty the same?

As I've said before, the support costs for selling external drives are  
probably lower than for selling bare drives, how many consumers manage  
to install a drive in their case and get the jumpers and cabling  
correct, as well as know how to make partitions etc., without having  
to call for help, or manage to screw something else up while the case  
was open and then complain "it didn't do that before I bought your  
drive"?

WD was probably happy to sell them at a lower price on a "don't bother  
us with your customer's problems" basis.

The vendor probably figured it was cheaper to throw the drive in a  
cheap case than to have people ready to answer the inevitable calls.
