I started having problems when I went to F8 as well.  What I ended up
doing was turning off all the KDE/Gnone screensaver/power saving
features and installing xscreensaver.  Now I can always wake up with
the remote whether it is running the screen saver or if it blanked the
monitor.

Unfortunately I enabled all the 'demos' that display our family photos
and now we seem to waste a lot of time watching the screen saver....
