G'day Martyn,

i) check in mythtv-setup that your recording direcories for recordings
and LiveTV are correctly set, and that the mythbackend user has
necessary rw permissions (if you saw video, they likely are)

ii) run mythfrontend in a terminal window (or use the logfile option)
to capture any errors related to video playback.

If you specify the -v logging option with at least
'record,playback,file' log targets for both mythbackend and
mythfrontend you will see more specific information that may help to
narrow down the issue.
