Well, one main reason for that is the actual voltage reduction on those 
opterons which you just referred to. I also know that reducing my clock 
on my old X2 3800+ did reduce the KW-hour usage. However, I didn't see a 
dramatic effect until I also lowered the voltage by 0.2V at the same 
time as the clock was reduced.

All I care about is the heat output though.
