The only thing you need to do is recreate the mythconverg database:

mysql -u root -p  < /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql

Now that you know the "root" user password for MySQL, this command 
should work.  And yes, put the user back to "mythtv" once you do this.  
Also, I know we're past this at this point, but I looked back on the 
thread and you seemed to have been able to connect via root.  You said that:

1) mythtv-setup worked as "root"
2) You were able to "drop database mythconverg;"

At this point it doesn't matter, but there definitely has been a 
disconnect here.
