The way I did it for the original LCD was, I connected the device to a 
Windows box, downloaded a USB packet sniffer, and used the device via 
the Windows drivers, checking out what USB packets were being sent 
to/from the LCD.

I was lucky, though, because the MediaPortal guys had already reverse 
engineered the protocol used by the SG_VFD.DLL that comes with the 
Windows software (and that's what they were using to drive the LCD from 
MediaPortal). I just needed to the use the packet sniffer to confirm 
that the protocol used by SG_VFD.DLL was pretty much directly translated 
into USB packets and sent to the device. I don't know if you'll be as 
lucky :-)
