I should have posted a follow-up - it seems to be a permissions issue
that I haven't sorted out completely yet.  If I run with root
privileges, it works, if I run as the myth user, it does not.  Still
investigating - I did make sure my mplayer settings were the same as
well.  I haven't had a chance to look at it again since but will try to
this weekend.
