can you try hdparm -tT /dev/sdd1 ( for all your drives)
(ps I'm not sure if that's totally safe, but I did it on the members
of my raid1 first to see if it let me.  It's just reading right :) )

I wonder if you have a failing drive or controller or channel and it's
not being detected.
