Following this thread I'd missed that you were using a wireless  
network. I agree that is almost certainly at least part of your problem.

I'd run some tests to check the performance of your network. 802.11  
does a good job of hiding problems due to interference, bad paths etc.

My own experience with wireless is that even with SD material  
everything has to be totally optimum for decent performance, and I  
wouldn't even try HD over a wireless link.

Also, remember that top shows an average over a period of time that is  
far longer than the periods involved in deinterlacing etc. You may be  
hitting peaks way over what top shows.
