[mythtv-users] LIRC problems after Ubuntu 8.04 update

I have just updated by MythTV box to v0.21 and Ubuntu 8.04; everything
that I have tried works just fine apart from the Hauppauge remote
control. I went back to the original installation procedure and, after
playing about for a while, concluded that the lircd is not running. As
part of my testing, I tried...

xxx at yyyy:~$ sudo lircd -n --driver=dev/input --device=/dev/input/event6
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: lircd(userspace) ready
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: initializing '/dev/input/event6'
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: removed client
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: closing '/dev/input/event6'
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: initializing '/dev/input/event6'
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: removed client
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: closing '/dev/input/event6'
lircd-0.8.3pre1[8065]: caught signal

    ...which worked prefectly with 'irw' and in MythTV, but when I try
to start the daemon, it will not start...

xxx at yyyy:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/lirc start
 * Loading LIRC modules
[ OK ]
 * Starting remote control daemon(s) : LIRC
[fail]

    I can not find anything in the system logs to indicate the source of
the problem. I did find an Ubuntu Hardy Heron bug report for beta 1
release (204960), but nothing else to indicate that this is an ongoing
problem. Has anyone else come across this and found a way to fix it?
Many thanks.
