dvd::rip's crop isn't neccisarily a bad thing. Definitely let it crop
away the matte area on 2.35:1 Cinemascope movies. There's no sense in
wasting bits on compressing black pixels and the playback software
(assuming it gets the aspect ratio correct) will reinsert the black
bars.

What *I* want to know is: is it better to deinterlace when encoding or
to do it on playback? Assuming playback horsepower is plentiful, of
course.
