It would be the simplest (if most expensive) solution to the problem; 
plinking away at the source code will work but keep in mind that an 
upgrades you do will reset the behavior you're experiencing and 
depending on how long it's been that bit of code might not be there any 
more.

N+1 can be overkill beyond a certain point (or time frame) but seems 
applicable here; it also gives you a 'backup' tuner should the original 
fail... that'll keep the WAF/HAF factor up :)
