I use mythbuntu 8.04, and I had some of the same issues. Use the envyNG
package: at the command line, type: sudo apt-get install envyNG

Then, from the programs menu at the top left, you'll see envy in there. That
will install/uninstall your nvidia drivers...works like a charm.

As for the optical sound, my intel sound card was detected fine, but the
optical output was muted. To unmute it from the command line, type in:
alsamixer

And press enter
This screenshot here is a good reference:

Press your right arrow button till you find your optical output...note, it
will look just like the "3D Contr" does in the image I linked to above.
Press M on your keyboard to unmute it. Sound should work (this is assuming
that your sound card was detected correctly). I've done several different
ubuntu and mythbuntu installs, and every time, the sound is muted by default
for the optical output.

As for updates, I'm very verry cautious on the updates. I keep 3 partitions
on my hard drive, two for individual mythbuntu installs, and one for swap. I
can boot into either of the two partitions, so if I muck one up (or ubuntu
updates mess things up), I can still boot into my mythbox via the other
partition so that I don't miss any important recordings (the wife's
programs). Then I worry about fixing the other install. At least this way,
it's not as time sensitive because you still have a working mythbox, even if
it's not as up to date. --Just an idea for you.

For xvmc, go to setup, then playback, then general, then to the screen where
you select slim, cpu+, high quality, etc up at the top. You have to edit one
of those profiles in order to set whether you want to use xvmc or not.

Hope that helps.

I have learned all this from struggles such as the one you currently are
going through.

--Good luck, and keep at it, you'll get it.
