Looks to me like you're dealing with a kernel/module funk specific to Ubuntu.
Short of building your own kernel, your best hope lies with the Ubuntu bug
fix processes eventually sorting it out.

I'd start by installing (or re-installing, apt-get --reinstall install <kernel package name>)
the latest and greatest Ubuntu kernel offering, and see what you're actually
dealing with then.
