If mode2 displays data from the remote the hard part is over.
The /etc/lirc/lircd.conf files includes a remote file
from /usr/share/doc/lirc/remotes. A file for a Hauppauge is available:

$ ls -l /usr/share/doc/lirc/remotes/hauppauge/
total 20
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 11655 2008-09-24 17:31 lircd.conf.hauppauge
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  2664 2008-09-24 17:31
lircd.conf.hauppauge_novat500
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   465 2001-12-15 11:35 lircmd.conf.hauppauge

The lircd.conf.hauppauge file above contains info for many of the
Hauppauge models.
