I think this was mentioned in the thread previously, but...
there is a difference between them putting the pay-for HD channels in
packets that require a cablebox do decode and encrypting them with 5C
which renders firewire capture impossible.
It would be hard to argue that requiring a cablebox to obtain channels
that one is required to pay for as being "evil". As for the 5C issue,
it is the individual channel and not Comcast which sets the initial 5C
flag. In fact, Comcast is not supposed to touch the 5C flag as sent
from the originating channel. Something that I've noticed that at
least in Boston Comcast has adhered to. Oddly, one of the local
stations accidentally set the 5C flag for a while (and it may still be
this way, I haven't checked lately) such that you could easily tune
the channel with an ATSC tuner, but you could not capture it over
firewire!
All the other channels we get have their 5C flag set by the content
owner and Comcast does not alter it.
At least thats how it is supposed to work, and at least in Boston, it
seems to be how things are working.
