I managed to solve my problem.

When I enter 'Utilities / Setup' and then 'Video Manager', I expected
the rescanning to occur, which it didn't. I'm pretty sure that this is
the way I used to do it.

What I had to do was to perform the re-scanning from within 'Media
Library' -> 'Watch Videos'. Click 'm' (menu) and then 'Scan for
changes'.

Could it be that the error message I described is what should have
been the rescanning dialog, but that it hasn't been ported to the new
gui yet?
