Well, do you want to turn down the brightness or dim the display?

Two different things.  You can leave the backlight (or however a plasma
works) on and dim the image.  I don't know what, if anything, that does to
the longevity of your screen.

randr is not a 'hardware hack'; it's been a part of Xorg for quite a while
and is a possible solution giving you what you asked for.  No guarantees
that it will work on your (or any) system.

If you want something that just turns down the image you have to google
for picture controls - good luck, though, as nVidia dropped support for
that after the 5xxx series cards, so unless you are using the x11 driver,
you're pretty much hosed.

Picture controls are much more of a hardware hack than randr as they are
hardware and driver dependent.  You may be able to hack up a screensaver,
or just find one that works for you.
