Many TVs and some monitors lie about their capabilities in the EDID. Some
give correct information via VGA but not via DVI.
There are quite a few parameters you can put into Xorg.conf to make the
Nvidia driver ignore some or all of the information in the EDID.
Also depending on your video card and TV/monitor it may be necessary to
disable the max pixelclock check.
I think nvidia-xconfig -A gives a detailed list.
