Today I installed 2.6.27-4-generic from the intrepid repository in the
hope to solve the problem. Unfortunately without success. I am now
convinced the problem is with the SB600 southbridge the on
GA.-MA78GM-S2H 780G motherboard.

I have found a bug on launchpad that looks like it is one of the same.
