John,  
    Thanks for this patch, I applied it to my trunk SVN 18545 and it 
solved the backend hanging I was having after upgrading to the 5.1 beta 
firmware.
I successfully recorded 3 shows last night without problems, and ac3 
passthrough to my receiver is just awesome.
