The main distinguishing feature, I suppose, would be whether a card has a
S/PDIF output or whether it only has a bunch of analog outputs.  I prefer
having S/PDIF output (could be either optical or coax; my receiver handles
both) as it's just one cable instead of three and there's no worrying
about ground loops or other deficiencies adding noise to the signal.  I
think, at this point, that only the absolute cheapest (<$20) sound cards
don't do S/PDIF.
