in setup -> tv settings -> playback on the first page do you have
extra audio buffering checked? i know that certain 1080i streams
stuttered if i didn't check that (pbs), even though i had plenty of
cpu left. might be something to look

I have "extra audio buffering" On..
I'll try with it off to see if that improves or are you suggesting it should be "ON"
