[mythtv-users] starting live tv or watch recording changes brightness on laptop

i have mythtv .21 installed on my lenovo y510 laptop running ubuntu 8.04.
when i start to watch either live tv or a recording, the brightness of the
whole display changes.  is there a setting somewhere that i can adjust to
change this behavior.
