We're actually talking about different boxes.

The DCH70s rent for $5/month.  The free ones are "digital transport
adapters," Motorola DC50X boxes.  They have no M-card or CableCard slot,
and provide an SDTV picture and monaural sound via an RF modulator output.
 They don't get On Demand, just the standard 2-99 cable channels, a few
additional ones in the 100s (such as Sprout), and some local radio
stations in the 900s.
